Mark Pickering is a long established New Zealand writer of walking and tramping guide books, as well as several history titles. Since his first book was published in 1986, he has sold over 250,000 books.
These include: 202 Great Walks, Day Walks of Canterbury and Kaikoura, and Huts: Untold Stories from Back-country New Zealand. He has also published two ebooks for download as Best Day Walks, a comprehensive guide to the top day walks and day hikes in New Zealand, with short concise text, many photographs and google maps.
Born in England, Mark has taken root in New Zealand, and has explored many forgotten landscapes, holed up in solitary old musterers’ huts, and mulled over the left-over ruins of people who lived and worked the lands long before he ever got there.
Twenty walking and tramping guidebooks later (see list below), Mark still finds himself looking at each place he visits with fresh eyes. He has made his living out of the mountains, and counts himself lucky that he never passed that bank manager’s exam. Mark lives in Christchurch with his partner, Rachel Barker, and their daughter Alexandra.

Dow A Trampers Journey
This book was first published by Craig Potton Publishing in 2005. It is both a personal history and a celebration of tramping in New Zealand. I'm grateful to Craig Potton Publishing for supplying me with the original In Design files, however, certain things get lost in translation. The font has changed slightly, since I've used Garamond. Also, some text is not precisely in the same place as the original book, and some photos are consequently not quite linked to the text. I have also added some extra photos where there were gaps. Some minor late corrections, originally made for the book in 2005 but were forgotten when the book was rushed to print, a common consequence of publishers deadlines. All these corrections and changes have now been made. Out of print and only available online.
The Coastal Journey
This is a history of the travelling routes along the coast of Westland, first published in 1993, and previously titled 'The Southern Journey'. Some corrections have been made, with a slight title change, and many new photographs and maps added. Some pages as yet unfinished with corrections continuing. If you are interested in the South Island's West Coast this book is for you, as it is a sort of history and travelogue combined. Now out of print and only available online.
The Colours
The search for payable gold on the West Coast from 1857 to 1864. First published in 2000, and text totally re-organised from original book version, with some additional information and a new chapter list. A lot of interesting historical characters here, maybe your ancestor? Now out of print so only available online.
End of Story
An unpublished mystery story, set in Golden Bay. This has not been edited and corrections are ongoing.
The Analysis of the Messy Data
An unpublished mystery story, set in Birdlings Flat and Christchurch. This has not been edited and corrections are ongoing.
The Wish House
An unpublished mystery story, set in Birdlings Flat and Christchurch. This has not been edited and corrections are ongoing.
Boadiceas Brooch

Strettonbury Blue
